Closing the CODEDU Project: What We Achieved and Why We Integrated an AI Chatbot into the Arduino Simulator

After months of collaboration, experimentation, and innovation, the CODEDU Erasmus+ project is reaching its final phase. This journey has been more than just a research initiative, it has been a practical effort to rethink how coding and electronics can be taught in schools in a way that is accessible, engaging, and future-oriented.

As we close the project, we would like to share what we achieved, what we learned, and why one of our key innovations was integrating an AI chatbot into the Arduino simulation platform.

What CODEDU Achieved

Through CODEDU, we successfully developed a complete educational ecosystem for teaching coding and Arduino in schools. This included:

  • An interactive Arduino simulation platform
  • A full toolkit for teachers
  • Training sessions and workshops for educators
  • An AI-powered learning assistant
  • Pilot testing in schools across Europe

Students were able to experiment with circuits such as smart lights, alarms, sensors, and simple robotics in a virtual environment—without needing expensive hardware.

Teachers gained ready-to-use lesson plans and confidence to introduce coding into their classrooms.

What We Learned

During the project, we discovered important insights:

  1. Students learn faster through experimentation.
Hands-on simulation makes abstract concepts easier to understand.
  2. Teachers need simple tools, not complex programming environments.
Many educators want to teach coding but lack technical background.
  3. Feedback and guidance must be immediate.
When students get stuck, learning stops.

These lessons led us to one key innovation.

Why We Integrated an AI Chatbot into the Arduino Simulator

One of the biggest challenges in coding education is support. Students often get stuck on small mistakes, and teachers cannot assist every learner at the same time.

To solve this, we integrated an AI chatbot into the CODEDU Arduino simulator.

The chatbot helps students by:

  • Explaining how circuits work
  • Identifying wiring mistakes
  • Suggesting improvements
  • Providing example code
  • Answering questions in multiple languages

It acts like a digital tutor available 24/7.

This approach allows students to keep learning independently while teachers focus on guidance and creativity.

Why This Matters for Education

By combining simulation, gamified learning, and AI assistance, CODEDU shows how education can become:

  • More inclusive
  • More interactive
  • More personalized
  • More accessible to beginners

Students gain confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills that are essential for the digital era.

Impact Beyond the Project

Even after the official end of CODEDU, the tools and materials we created will continue to be used by schools and educators. Our toolkit and platform will remain available, and we will continue improving them based on feedback from teachers and students.

CODEDU and Arduino Education: Building Digital Skills for the Future Through Real Data

In recent years, the importance of digital skills has grown dramatically across Europe and around the world. According to the European Commission, more than 90% of future jobs will require at least basic digital skills, while at the same time around 40% of Europeans still lack adequate digital competence. In addition, studies from UNESCO and OECD show that countries investing early in STEM education see higher innovation rates and stronger economic growth. These numbers clearly show that education systems must evolve to prepare students for a technology-driven future. One of the most effective tools for introducing these skills in schools is Arduino, especially when supported by structured initiatives such as the CODEDU Erasmus+ project.

Arduino is widely used in education because it allows students to understand the connection between software and hardware in a simple and practical way. It is estimated that millions of students worldwide have used Arduino boards in classrooms, robotics clubs, or university labs. In Europe alone, thousands of schools have integrated Arduino into STEM curricula as part of coding and robotics initiatives. Research has shown that students who participate in hands-on electronics and coding activities improve problem-solving skills by up to 20–30% compared to traditional lecture-based learning. These results highlight the value of experiential learning environments.

The CODEDU project was designed to bring these benefits to more schools across Europe. Through CODEDU, partners developed an Arduino simulation platform, training materials for teachers, and interactive learning scenarios. The simulator allows students to experiment with circuits digitally before working with physical equipment, reducing costs and increasing accessibility. This approach is particularly important because many schools lack resources to purchase hardware kits. By using a virtual platform combined with structured lessons, CODEDU helps teachers introduce coding and electronics without financial or technical barriers.

Statistics from education research also show that project-based learning increases student engagement significantly. Students who work on real-world projects such as smart lighting systems, environmental sensors, or automated alarms are more likely to continue studying STEM subjects. Arduino projects often lead to interest in robotics, engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence. In fact, surveys of university engineering students reveal that a large percentage had their first experience with electronics through Arduino kits or similar microcontroller platforms. This demonstrates how early exposure can shape future careers.

Another important aspect highlighted by CODEDU is the role of technology in building transversal skills. Beyond programming, students learn teamwork, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. These are among the most demanded skills in the modern labour market. According to the World Economic Forum, analytical thinking, innovation, and technology literacy are among the top competencies required in the coming decade. Arduino-based education helps develop exactly these abilities.

The integration of simulation tools and AI assistants within CODEDU also reflects broader trends in education. Studies show that students who receive instant feedback through digital tools progress faster and remain more motivated. By combining Arduino learning with interactive platforms, CODEDU demonstrated how technology can personalize education and support teachers at the same time. This hybrid approach—mixing traditional teaching with digital innovation—is becoming a model for future classrooms.

In conclusion, the statistics are clear. Europe needs stronger digital skills, more STEM education, and practical learning methods. Arduino offers a simple and powerful way to achieve these goals, and the CODEDU project has shown how it can be implemented effectively in schools. By investing in initiatives like CODEDU, we are not only teaching students how to program circuits; we are preparing a generation capable of innovation, creativity, and problem-solving in a rapidly changing world.

The Power of Arduino: Why Learning It Matters and Where These Skills Can Be Used

Arduino has become one of the most important educational tools of our time because it allows students to understand how technology truly works, not just how to use it. In a world filled with smart devices, automation, and digital systems, young people need to develop logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Arduino offers exactly this opportunity. It is a simple and affordable platform that enables students to build interactive electronic systems that sense, respond, and communicate with the real world. Through Arduino, abstract concepts from science and mathematics turn into practical experience.

Within the framework of the CODEDU Erasmus+ project, this idea was taken a step further. The goal of CODEDU was to bring coding and Arduino into schools in a structured, accessible way for both students and teachers. During the project, partners developed an educational platform, training materials, and an Arduino simulation environment that allows students to experiment with circuits digitally before moving to real hardware. This approach helps schools that may not have access to expensive equipment and makes learning more inclusive and engaging.

Through CODEDU, students were able to explore real-world scenarios such as smart lighting systems, environmental sensors, and automated alarms, learning step by step how technology works behind everyday devices. Teachers received guidance and lesson plans that made it easier to integrate Arduino into their classes, even without prior experience in programming or electronics. The project showed that when students learn by building and experimenting, their understanding deepens and their motivation increases.

The knowledge gained from Arduino can be applied in many areas of real life. It forms the foundation of smart home systems, robotics, automation, environmental monitoring, and even healthcare technologies. Students who learn Arduino can later work in engineering, IT, research, or entrepreneurship, but even those who choose different careers benefit from the ability to think analytically and creatively. Arduino teaches how to approach a problem, test ideas, and improve solutions—skills that are valuable in every profession.

One of the important lessons from CODEDU was that education must adapt to the way students learn today. Combining simulation tools, interactive exercises, and intelligent support systems makes coding more accessible and enjoyable. By introducing Arduino into classrooms, schools help students move from passive learning to active creation. They become not just users of technology but designers and innovators.

In this sense, Arduino is more than a tool, and CODEDU is more than a project. Together they represent a step toward an educational model where creativity, experimentation, and digital skills are part of everyday learning. By giving students the chance to explore technology in a practical and meaningful way, we prepare them for a future that will depend on innovation, collaboration, and the ability to turn ideas into reality.

Co-Founder & CTO Vasilis Balafas Highlights the Role of Solution Diversity in AI Constraint Acquisition at SETN 2024

On September 12, 2024, Vasilis Balafas, Co-Founder and CTO of a leading AI-focused technology company, made a significant contribution to the 13th EETN Conference on Artificial Intelligence (SETN 2024) in Piraeus, Greece. Balafas presented his latest research, titled “The Impact of Solution Diversity on Passive Constraint Acquisition,” which shed light on an essential topic in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Constraint Programming (CP). His research explores how solution diversity can enhance the effectiveness of passive learning approaches in Constraint Acquisition (CA).

Overview of the Research

Constraint Programming (CP) is a powerful methodology widely used to tackle combinatorial problems. These types of problems involve finding an optimal solution from a large set of possibilities and are frequently encountered in industries such as logistics, scheduling, and resource allocation. However, manually defining the constraints necessary to model these problems can be an intricate process, requiring both time and expertise.

To address this challenge, Constraint Acquisition (CA) techniques have emerged. CA automates part of the process by learning constraints from examples of solutions and non-solutions. Instead of manually specifying all constraints, CA allows machines to identify patterns and rules from data, making the process more efficient and less reliant on human expertise.

Balafas’ research focuses on the passive learning approach within CA, where the system learns by observing provided examples rather than interacting or querying the environment. This approach, while efficient, poses its own set of challenges, especially when the provided solution set lacks diversity.

The Impact of Solution Diversity

At the heart of Vasilis Balafas’ research lies the concept of solution diversity. Simply put, solution diversity refers to the variety within the set of solutions that are used for learning. A diverse set of solutions introduces variability, helping the system to generalize better and accurately infer the necessary constraints.

Balafas demonstrated that diverse solution sets can significantly improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the constraint learning process. His work presented an experimental evaluation of three distinct problems, each approached with varying diversity metrics to determine the impact on learning outcomes.

The results of his research underscored the importance of providing a well-rounded, diverse solution set for passive learning systems. With diverse examples, the system can better understand the underlying structure of the problem, leading to higher-quality learned constraints. Moreover, Balafas introduced a Machine Learning (ML) model capable of predicting whether a given set of solutions would yield accurate constraint acquisition based on diversity metrics and the number of solutions provided.

Conclusion

Vasilis Balafas’ presentation at SETN 2024 underscored his commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI research. His work not only highlights the critical role of solution diversity in enhancing passive constraint acquisition but also paves the way for future advancements in Constraint Programming and Artificial Intelligence.

By advancing research in this area, Balafas has laid the groundwork for improving AI-driven problem-solving techniques, especially in fields like logistics, operations research, and scheduling. His team continues to innovate, applying these findings to real-world applications where diverse solutions can optimize AI performance and efficiency.

For those eager to stay ahead of the curve in AI innovation, following the future developments of Vasilis Balafas and his research team promises to deliver cutting-edge insights into the evolving world of AI constraint acquisition.
